What is a Tier 4 Diesel Generator?
In 1970, the United States government passed the Clean Air Act, which required companies manufacturing diesel-fueled equipment to meet stringent emissions regulations. Diesel generators are no exception. Diesel emissions are considered harmful whether they come from on-road vehicles, off-road vehicles, or generator sets. These emission standards, set forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, regulate a wide range of emissions, including nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and non-methane hydrocarbons. To comply with these emissions regulations, a diesel generator must meet reduced particulate matter requirements.
How Tier 4 Regulations Affect Air Quality
As of 2008, Tier 4 emissions standards were being phased into the industry, and currently, any new prime power or portable diesel generator must be manufactured to these specifications. Because it requires companies to manufacture generators that produce almost zero emissions, consumers can buy these products without concerns over air quality. While operating your emergency generator at a safe distance is essential, you can be confident that you’re contributing to clean air in your community. Tier 4 generators afford plenty of other benefits, too. For example, they often operate with less noise than older models and may provide greater fuel efficiency. Maintenance needs are also lower and can contribute to a lower cost of ownership over the generator’s life.
Emergency vs. Non-Emergency Diesel Generators
It’s important to note that the standards vary between emergency and non-emergency generators. Due to their emergency-use nature, it’s understood that emergency generators won’t be used long-term. Because their use is temporary, standby generators are exempt from the most stringent Tier 4 standards and are only subject to Tiers 2 and 3. So, to ensure your generator meets the most current, applicable standards, evaluate how it will be used and make your selection accordingly.
Types of Generators
There are several different kinds of diesel generators you may consider for your home. The first is a mobile generator. These models are often cheaper and can be moved around if needed. However, this type of generator should never be operated indoors, near sensitive equipment or in the rain even if they meet the most recent Tier 4 standards. Inverter generators are another type you might want to consider. Though these are generally more expensive than other types, they are less disruptive to the surrounding environment. They’re quieter and produce fewer emissions, making them slightly safer — though you should still avoid running them indoors. Home standby generators are another product that can give you peace of mind even before an emergency situation. While these are the most costly units to install, they offer reliable backup power by starting up automatically if the power goes out. Remember that emergency generators are not subject to the same standards as non-emergency generator sets.

There are lots of things to consider when choosing a generator. As we’ve mentioned, the essential point is performance. Generators are measured by their power output, generally represented in watts. While some diesel generators may have a high output (or high wattage), it’s essential to look at the quality of the output as well. Sometimes even a large generator might get overloaded or trip a circuit if too many items are drawing power at one time. Try to calculate the wattage that all essential appliances will draw in your home, and then use that to select the right-size power equipment.
